Newsday Golfer of the Year: Madison Chen, Manhasset, Jr.

Madison Chen doesn’t play loudly. Instead, her scorecard does the talking.

The Manhasset junior and two-time Newsday Golfer of the Year reclaimed her crown with a two-day total of 3-over-par 145 across Bethpage Blue and Green, earning her second Nassau individual title in three seasons.

“I knew my time would come again soon,” said Chen, who first won as a freshman in 2023.

She opened her final round on Bethpage Green with back-to-back bogeys but settled in quickly, carding four birdies and delivering one of the tournament’s defining moments: a 33-foot par save on the sixth hole after a wayward approach.

“I shanked it to the right and then I had 95 [yards] in and made a 33-footer for par,” she said. “There’s no reason to dwell on one bad shot when I can hit the next one great.”

That mindset and a drastically improved short game powered her return to the top.

“Putting used to be one of the weakest parts of my game, but over the past two years I’ve really focused on it and now I think it’s one of the strongest,” Chen said.

Chen placed 27th at the state championship at Wild Wood Country Club with a two-day total of 21-over-par 165.

And with one more year to go, Chen is already eyeing a strong finish to a decorated high school career.

Palwasha Ali, Sewanhaka, Sr.

Last year’s Suffolk champion at Glenn, Ali moved to Sewanhaka this year where she finished third at the Nassau championship with a 10-over 152. She placed 15th at the state championship with a 13-over 157.

Renna Chang, Jericho, Sr.

The 2021 county champion finished second in Nassau with a two-day total of 149. She finished 11th at the state championship with a 10-over 154.

Ella Girard, Ward Melville, Jr.

Girard claimed her second straight Suffolk individual title with a 14-over 156 at Middle Island Country Club. She led all Suffolk golfers at the Long Island championship with a 78 and finished tied for 12th at the state championship (11-over 155).

Bridget LaRosa, Kellenberg, Sr.

LaRosa shot an 86 at Eisenhower White to finish second at the NSCHSGAA championship.

Emilia Parlow, St. Anthony’s, Fr.

The Commack golfer made an immediate impact on the Friars and captured the NSCHSGAA individual title with a career-low 1-over 73.

Elie Poremba, Southampton/Pierson, So.

Poremba finished second at the Suffolk championship with a 19-over 161 and at the Long Island championship with a 76.

Caylin Wong, Great Neck District, Jr.

Wong was the top scorer among Long Island golfers at the state championship where she finished ninth with an 8-over 152. She also helped Great Neck clinch its fifth straight Long Island team championship with a first-place finish of 72 at Bethpage Green.

Coach of the Year: Edgar Franklin, Southampton/Pierson

Franklin has led Southampton/Pierson to a 26-0 streak in the past two seasons, which included undefeated back-to-back county and Suffolk IV titles.
